Tax Time Confessions: Weird Things Clients Have Tried to Claim (That the ATO Said ‘Nope’ To)

Look, we’ve all stared at a receipt and thought, “Surely I can claim this.” But some tax deduction ideas are so creative, they deserve their own Netflix special. In this post, we’re sharing the wildest, weirdest things we’ve heard about clients trying to claim — purely for educational (and entertainment) purposes, of course.
🔹 1. The 'Work-from-Bath' Laptop Claim
One client wanted to claim a new laptop as a “bath-based work device” after dropping their old one in the tub. While we admire the hustle, the ATO didn’t agree that scented bubble baths improved productivity.
🔹 2. The Tinder Subscription
“Networking,” they said. “Client engagement,” they insisted. The ATO said, “Absolutely not.” Unless you’re a professional dating coach, this one’s a no-go.
🔹 3. The Magic 8-Ball
Used “for decision-making in the business.” The ATO didn’t need to shake it to know the answer was “Don’t count on it.”
🔹 4. Emotional Support Llama (True Story)
Someone tried to claim costs for their llama, arguing it reduced stress before meetings. Look — we love animals. But unless the llama is guarding your warehouse, it’s not deductible.
🔹 5. Birthday Cake for the Office — Except There’s No Office
If you’re self-employed and throwing yourself a party, you might be able to claim some food for client entertainment… but not if you’re the only guest.
Tax time doesn’t have to be boring — but it does have to be legit. If you’re not sure what counts, ask us before the ATO starts asking you.
📞 Got a strange deduction idea? We’ve probably heard weirder. Let’s talk before your tax return turns into a comedy show.
